How The Hockey Museum became a Regional Case Study for Excellent Museum Practice
January 20, 2024

In 2021, The Hockey Museum (THM) board began an equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) initiative to build upon the good work already taking place innately at the Museum. This initiative was driven by an EDI Committee formed of volunteers, THM trustees and our Curator, and chaired by trustee Tochi Panesar.

THM was successful in our application to take part in a nationwide EDI programme, which in our region was led by South East Museum Development (SEMD). We were one of only nine museums in the south east of England selected to take part. The programme started in November 2021 and concluded in May 2022, after which we were successful in securing grant funding to create an action plan to apply EDI leaning at THM. The passion and drive we showed in implementing this initiative at THM meant we were selected by SEMD as a case study in 2023 – the output of which is the following film about THM and its EDI programme.

The Hockey Museum: Inclusivity & Relevance. A film case study promoting best practice in museums in the South East.

In 2024, the EDI Committee will look to create a Framework that we will use during the planning stages of all THM projects. Tailored to THM’s circumstances and globally unique collection, the Framework will positively challenge those involved in projects to consider how best to make them inclusive and accessible in terms of content, participants and our audiences.

THM’s Commitments to EDI, recently approved by our Board of Trustees, can be found on the Vision, Mission and Goals section of our website.
