Our Mission, Vision & Commitments
Giving hockey’s history a future.
The Hockey Museum: the first and only museum for hockey in the world.
Discover our Purpose and Direction
The Hockey Museum is the first and only museum for hockey in the world. We are a charity working to preserve, share and celebrate the rich history and heritage of the sport of hockey, not only in Britain where the ‘modern’ game started, but also from all round the world.
The Museum is home to a growing collection of hockey archives and heritage objects which we make accessible to the hockey family and the wider public through our website, exhibition and outreach programme, and our mailing list newsletters Hockey Shorts. You can subscribe to receive Hockey Shorts at the bottom of this page.

Strategic Commitments 2030
Build our new home
We will review our current facilities and develop the scope for a ‘new home’ that includes non-negotiables and a high-level financial projection.
Care for our collection
We will develop sustainable collections management practices and make the collection more accessible for public use and benefit by developing organisational knowledge of our collection and opportunities for dedicated and trained collection volunteers.
Reflect a more digital world
We will create a realistic and achievable Digitisation Plan and prioritise and prepare our collection for digitisation.
Develop engaged audiences
We will create and execute a manageable communications strategy that broadens our appeal and value.
Achieve financial security
We will recruit a dedicated Trustee with responsibility for grant writing and increase the annual total of donations.
Commitments
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).
1. We will continue to state our commitment to EDI in our Mission, Vision and Strategic Goals and will maintain an EDI Committee to ensure that THM delivers an EDI Action Plan and reports progress against it to the Board of Trustees at every board meeting.
2. We will ensure that we are inclusive and that our communications and activities represent the global hockey family who share protected characteristics, and diverse backgrounds and experiences. We commit to consulting with THM audiences to shape our plans and work together to create content.
3. We will embed EDI into our culture, creating a safe and welcoming environment that is inclusive. Our culture will celebrate and represent the diverse society in which we live and work in, ensuring everyone feels a sense of belonging and can be themselves.
4. We will seek to enable all visitors to The Hockey Museum in person and online, to have a positive experience that is welcoming and inclusive. This will involve looking at how we can break down barriers to enable this positive experience.
5. We will promote trustee, paid and volunteering roles to different community networks and platforms and adhere to recruitment best practices.
Awards
We are a young, award-winning museum.
In May 2018, The Hockey Museum was awarded Accredited Museum status by Arts Council England and later that year our work was recognised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) when we received the President’s Award at the FIH Congress for our “contribution to preserving hockey’s heritage”.
In recent years we have been awarded project funding from Arts Council England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, South East Museum Development, and the Surrey Museums Partnership.
