The below obituary was originally published by Beeston Hockey Club on Facebook, 23 February 2026. Bob was a good friend of The Hockey Museum’s founding trustees. Prior to his battle with Parkinson’s disease, he was an early supporter of the Museum and an informal ambassador for our activities in the Midlands.
Robert ‘Bob’ McBlane, a lifelong servant of the game of hockey and a cherished figure within the Midlands hockey community, has passed away aged 81 after more than 50 years of dedicated involvement in the sport he loved.
Bob’s commitment to hockey spanned every level of the game. In the mid-1990s, he served as a respected goalkeeping coach at Beeston Hockey Club in the early days of the English National League. Bob was made an honorary vice-president in recognition of his commitment to the club over several years.
For two decades, Bob was at the heart of hockey at Loughborough Students Hockey Club, serving as manager for both the men’s and ladies’ first teams. His leadership, organisation, and unwavering support helped shape generations of players.
His influence extended throughout Nottinghamshire, where he took on the role of County Junior Manager for Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 squads. His work with young players ensured strong foundations for the future of the game.
As an umpire, Bob officiated at Midlands Premier and National League level. After stepping back from active officiating, he continued to contribute as an umpire assessor, mentoring and supporting the next generation of officials.
Across more than half a century, Bob’s involvement in hockey was defined by service, humility, and an enduring love for the game. He was a familiar and reassuring presence on the sidelines, a mentor to many, and a friend to all who shared his passion.
Robert ‘Bob’ McBlane leaves behind a lasting legacy within the hockey community. He will be remembered not only for his many roles and achievements but for his kindness, dedication, and the countless lives he touched through the sport.
