Members of THM and SHC teams pose with Olympian John Peake and decedants of Olympian Gerald Logan.
2016 is an exciting Olympic year with the Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5 to 21 August 2016 and the Paralympics in September. To celebrate, The Hockey Museum (THM) has installed a special Olympic hockey display at the Surrey History Centre. It runs from 2 August to 25 August 2016 during normal opening hours.
Hockey has been in the Olympics for over 100 years and many of the Olympic players have links to Surrey. The exhibition showcases medals from all three London Olympics: 1908 gold, 1948 silver and 2012 bronze medals won by Surrey men and women; and it utilises artefacts and archival materials such as clothing, posters, artwork and photography, programmes, stamps and sticks to tell the story of hockey’s Olympic history.
On the evening of Tuesday 2 August a unique Olympic occasion took place at Surrey History Centre. For the very first time John Peake, 1948 silver medallist was present along with descendants of Gerald Logan, 1908 gold hockey medallist. Georgie Twigg – the 2012 bronze medallist left for the Rio Olympics a few days before.
Museum Curator Mike Smith said of the event, “The preview evening was an amazing sporting event by any standards. To have the medals from all three London Olympics available to been seen together along with John, our oldest surviving hockey Olympian, is an occasion unlikely to ever be repeated.”
This fantastic display is a glimpse into the important collection built by The Hockey Museum since it was established in Woking in 2011. Display on show at Surrey History Centre, 130 Goldsworth Road, Woking, GU21 6ND until 25 August.
