Hockey’s Origins
Discover how modern hockey began in England, as well as other type of stick and ball games from all around the world which preceded and possibly influenced it.
The Beginnings of Modern Hockey
Modern hockey began with the founding of Teddington Hockey Club in England and their creation of the first codified rules of hockey in 1871. Teddington’s rules most heavily influenced those of the first Hockey Association in 1875.
Blackheath Hockey Club was formed before Teddington in 1861, yet their version of hockey was distinctly different and less influential on the development of the modern game. Teddington’s form of hockey is the forerunner of the game we play today which then spread around the world, largely through the British Empire.

Early Stick and Ball Games
Before the global spread of hockey from England, various forms of stick-and-ball game existed on most continents of the world. Without these early stick-and-ball activities, modern hockey may not have arrived – hockey could not have come out of a vacuum. The games that came before, some of which continue to be played today, are part of the ethnographic evolutionary journey of hockey’s development.
Some are indigenous sports arising continents apart. Some are sport as preparation for warfare while others have their origins in religious ceremony. Some use purposely made sticks while others draw on mother nature using branches or tree roots for equipment. Some involve carrying a ball rather than propelling it on or across the floor.
Humanity’s impulse for stick and ball games is wonderous in its variety.
